Top 3 Tips for Better Sleep

Why Do We Need Sleep?

Sleep is one of those pesky “must” for good physical & mental health. It’s an essential function (something our bodies must have to survive) that allows the body and mind to recharge. Healthy sleep also helps the body remain healthy and stave off diseases. Without enough sleep, the brain cannot function properly.

I personally experienced true sleep deprivation after my second child for more than a year.  I am certain that both my brain and my body suffered because of it.  There are times in our lives when we can’t control our sleep well (like new baby stage or caregiving for someone who is ill, etc).  However, when we can, it is helpful to support ourselves in getting and maintaining healthy sleep.

My Top Three Tips for Improving Sleep

  • Go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day (even on the weekends)

  • Don’t count hours of “sleep” - count hours of restful time in your sleep environment (ie: if you lay down for bed at 10p but don’t fall asleep for an hour don’t stress about that hour. Instead congratulate yourself for giving your body that chance to rest/relax.)

  • Setting your body’s Master Clock is the kickstarter for your hormone regulation so getting even ten mins of sunshine early(ish) in the morning will help your endocrine system reset for the day.
