take a hike (literally!) to reduce stress

Spring is upon us and one of my favorite ways to destress is to get out in nature and take a walk or a hike!

How Nature Helps Us Reduce Stress

Being out in nature helps our nervous systems to downregulate.  Often this is because we can have “direct experiences” which is when you take notice of something physically observable such as the way the sunshine feels on your skin or you can hear the crunch of the leaves under your feet bringing you into the present moment.

Immersing yourself in nature can also:

  • Lower your blood pressure

  • Reduce your stress hormone levels

  • Enhance immune system functioning

  • Improve your mood

How To Get Out There

Any time you can spend in nature is beneficial. If you’re struggling with where to take your next hike or walk, check out the free Hiking Project app. Born from the dream to help people get outside, Hiking Project showcases thousands of trails in your own backyard, across the U.S. and around the globe. You can filter trail results by distance, difficulty, rating, and more!

If you are in the Fort Worth area, there are 95 miles of suggested hiking trails- and more are being added each day by enthusiastic users.
